Aren't we all a WIP? Seasons: New Exhibit Opening, New Works, New Studio, New Website, etc etc etc.

Its Personal-featured April Fine Art Connoisseur
Been through, and done just about it all in the past several months.  It has been a whirlwind.
Grandma Jean At Seventeen A Work In Progress

The last thing that there has been time for is updating this blog.  The last several months have been filled with the exciting part of new Seasons, and also the heartache of new Seasons too.  Lost my mom on February 6th. She and my sister of course my biggest fans. Lost my sister November of 2015.  Still getting use to that too.  Frankly it has been a very hard last 6 months.  Mom lived her dash well and will be sorely missed; mother of five, grandma Jean of 14 and great grandma Jean to 6. She rode her bike to the grocery store up until she was 85.
Grandma Jean at 83 attending my solo opening Feb. 2015 and me

She loved her independence.  It was very hard days moving her in and out of assisted living to nursing care to hospitals and that horrible circle. She celebrated her 87th Birthday in an Assisted Living Facility. We were not able to keep her home, or I can assure you we would have.  We remained blessed in that she did receive the best of care at all the facilities she was with.  They were just nowhere she truly wanted to be.  She kept her since of humor through the end though, and that glorious twinkle in her beautiful blue eyes.
Her portraits remain a WIP, as I have to stick to (or better said get back to) preparing for the exhibit that opens on the 22nd of March at the Hughes Gallery in Boca Grande FL.  Visions of Three Artist, Diane Mannion, Ed Hatch and myself, Karen Ann Hitt. This new season of being the only female with my three brothers and 87 year old pop, remains a challenge to get my voice heard.  But what else is new.  I have often jested that I am the petite one in my family, and I still am.  That surprises a lot of people, when they meet me and hear that, for I stand just shy of six feet tall.  The other jest,  I am going to be petite when I grow up!

Alas, to go along with my new Website, last website was begun way back in 1995.  A LOT has changed in cyber land since then, as has it with myself.  I will get into that more after my exhibit opens!  BUT if you want a chance to win a 200 Gift Certificate toward your very own An Original Hitt, go check out my new website and sign up to join my email list or new updates.... I am putting all the names in a hat, and drawing one name out to win.  Now if you don't 'want' An Original Hitt and just hope to follow the new, please join my list too.  We will work out something to your favor too if I draw your name.  I'm no marketer, and if it wasn't for Turner Vinson doing MOST of the New Websites Work, wouldn't have made it this far.  If you sign up, I will send you a sneak peak of the exhibit on an e-post card too.  Save the date:
22 March 2019 from 6-8 PM for the opening!  So honored to be represented by the Hughes Gallery in Boca Grande, they truly are a premiere gallery in this region.  Hope you will come have a toast with me at the gallery ( go to website events for more details ) hint hint ...
You will also see all the new publications that I have been blessed to be a part of in the last few months, The events That I have been a part and the ones coming up.  LOTS of NEW....

# 2, 3, 6 & 7 are the focus of today's post.  We are getting ready to head into nomads land of CO/Wyoming in the Routt National Forest area on our #USAHoneymoon.

Because Bryan Mark Taylor the genius and talent behind my favorite Plein Air Easel is running a little contest, thought I would focus on that today too.   Plein Air Magazine, Bob Bahr for Outdoor Painter helped me out with a share too, on how I use a car sunshade to protect my eyes from glare when a umbrella is not feasible.  SO honored by Bob taking my mistake and making it look good:

My favorite plein air easels, are made by the same company.  Strada Easel.  I have the original, and the mini.  Hope to win a micro, Bryans newest addition to his genius line of easel.  These easels are both light weight and literally indestructible!  I have taken them around the USA, several times and stuck them on rocks, in rivers, sand storms, winds... (no snow yet) a little bit of everything.  He even has an extension so you can add larger panels.  Here is Bryans Facebook post on his latest contest:
"One of our STRADA easels recently made a trip to one of the most remote places on earth, Easter Island! Where has your STRADA been?
Use ‪#‎stradaworldwide‬ in your post on Face book and we'll enter you to WIN a STRADA MICRO!

This picture shows me at my first beloved easel.  Though I loved it, you can see that making it tall enough was a technicality for me. Most locations it was fine... though now that i have a higher one, it has really helped!  Second picture is the my first time using a Strada Easel, the Original.

You be the Judge... who knew how much life would change...

Part I: Update and a sharing of the tools behind a "Painters Paradise" and a NEW Season in Life...
The Flume "Painters Paradise" by Karen Ann Hitt

Eric Rhoads, Publisher of Plein Air Magazine and Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine, hosts  #PaintCamp once a year in upstate NY Adirondack region each June.  This year we were even there right when the escape convicts were on the loose!  Nothing could steal the JOY of 100-ish artist gathering to PAINT en Plein Air where the number one rule is "NO DRAMA" We managed to stick to that rule, accept when it exploded into the sky!
Adirondacks Drama II by Karen Ann Hitt, Plein Air Oil

Third Year has begun on my committed plan to grow as an artist to meet the next season in life,  as of April 2015.  Right after my One Women exhibit "At That Moment..." (two years and 21,000+ solo miles cris-crossing the USA in its making) wrapped up, that third year began.

Its been quite the journey!  And who knew it would be a new beginning instead of a wrap up! The jest in April 2013 "Youngest turned 22 and momma took a road trip, a really big one!" 21,000+ solo miles, 70+ Paintings for a One Women Exhibit later...

A desire to paint "Boundless" that inspired a gift that has just kept on giving...
"Exceedingly more than I could hope for or imagine" while seeking to "Put this (gift)... to work" as the Red letter counsel inspired me to do.

 Ponce de Leon- Miracle Studio
Grace Love Fellowship Tour - Miracle Trip
When I returned to my home in Sept of 2013, from my 21,000 plus mile journey that felt like a miracle gift in itself,  another dear friend and her husband had me in mind for another miracle blessing to bestow upon me; a working Art studio that they originally had for a family member. They decided it would be well served with me inhabiting it.  When I shared that I loved the space, but that there was no way that I could take on anymore debt, they shared--- don't worry about it, we already paid for EVERYTHING!  Who, i ask who does that happen for?  Perhaps this is all too much information, but I think its important to share that by gifts, well beyond what ever deserved, it has given me a second and third chance at my art career beyond 17 hard years of single parenthood.

This third year the year to put into practice every professional avenue made available to me, by working hard, continuing learning processes, and continuing leaps of faith.

Who knew what would come from simply leaping out, working hard with the means supplied, and keeping the faith. Much HARD WORK remains ahead on this three year plot, that in reality is a journey for life.  Growing, is a key indeed, to well, just that-- growing.
This year in my original plan, was to be the year that I paint the many people that to this artist were indeed Angels here on earth; and to also paint studio paintings with the focus on applying all learned across the miles into paintings to use as entries for competitions, and gallery inquiry.   Two professional application of my painting career, that I have been waiting until it was felt the quality could at least measure up to the hopes. Continually challenging myself with new subjects while applying learned techniques from workshops and demos of peers and muses. Growing, underlines still and HUMBLING defines any artist's pursuits.  So with that in mind, I am right in line.

A professional nationally exhibiting artist and fine art instructor, yet also a growing artist, building an inventory.  Its amazing what all has changed in this past 3 years and especially this past year.

I went from touring the country for over 5 months camping out of my Trusty Steed of a Tahoe... yes, for the most part living out of it.  When I really needed to soak my toes in a nice hot tub, a beautiful B&B along the way, was where I would stay. Often I found myself blessed with them wanting me to stay on longer- so my budget of only a day or two, turned into a painting barter for a week or so stay. Some places I still have a balance even.  So, i went from camping IN my Trusty Steed of a Tahoe to....

You can see my Tahoe here at Zion, with my tent gazebo... this pretty much how I traveled the country solo, en plein air, my comfy bed in the Tahoe.  I actually felt safer that way, with my feather blanket, and feather pillow for my head...

...well, not!

my trusty steed learned to trust,
and it got hitched! Um, me TOO and WE are now on our #USAHoneymoon making our new road map!

I've HITT the road again.  This time I am on a #USAHoneymoon with my love and yes, my new husband.  Funny, we both had prayed a prayer accepting God's obvious plan of being alone in life.  Then bamn --we met.  We kept our relationship dedicated to God's call on our hearts and honoring of His ways.  Something foreign to most at our stages in life; 7 months later God turned our 7 into a first for both of us, as we married with just our immediate family around.
Some of his attractions to me is my faith, aesthetic passions and my passion for traveling.  He admired my road map :0) that little jaunt that i took.  Well NOW we are on one of our own.  Married in May.  The first painting i painted as "Mrs." Just so happens was done for my church, The Bridge Church in Venice Florida.  Here is a link to that; P23 I delivered it, on a wednesday, and we were off on our #USAHoneymoon tour right after church on that Sunday in May 2015, and we are there still today.

Finding a wifi to update my blog and websites the challenge for the day.  This my last painting painted, "Superior's Towers" my first midwest grain elevators.

Along with this is a link to my updated Workshop/Classes page, and also a sharing of some of my favorite tools too...
stay tuned for my Rosemary Brushes supply list, STRADA mini, tripod, and other tricks of the plein air trade that i have learned along the way; along with how to set up a outdoor art studio too.  This truly is a working #USAHoneymoon, but we didn't forget to live outloud also that "The Journey IS our destination"

That remains where I began, and also where I have landed.  I feel all has grown my painting ability as hoped, and awakened me also to how much more there is to do.
If you would like to follow along on the journey, request to be my facebook friend, and also check back here or join here too.  I am excited to share my class offerings, adding some NEW WORKSHOPS this year, and soon a kit of supplies too.... stay tuned.  I remain humbled and honored to be a part... Part II: The tools used and how to apply posting next week.

Life imitating Art? or is Art imitating Life? and HOW

On the heels of 'Labor Day' finished up a painting on Labor Day, that's inspiration for came back on the 26 of August.  This the little post it note written to self that day in Journal:

The painting was all done except for the bee, that well... isn't all that easy to come by.  The fact that this one came to me by way of the bee keeper that also supplied the honey was so more appropriate than they knew.  This bee stung him in the ankle the morning he brought it to me and died.  What does this have to do with Art and Painting?  What we do with our gifts and talents the point, no pun intended.
My Last Post Titled "What New Florida Plein Air Collectors Look Like" In it introduced you to Gary and Suzanne, and also the plein air activities in the area, to show you two ways of collecting.  As a Patron or a Painter, plus how to grow your artist career in both of these with the help of teaching tools made available.  All linked at that post.  Just a few days after that post, called Gary to share some good news with him.  Suzanne answered his phone, not uncommon for a husband and wife at all. So shared with her the good news that Jane Chapin (artist added to their new collection) visited my studio and brought a gift for them; a personalized copy of her book "Land Of The Free"and I had it for them at the studio.
Suzanne shared 'how wonderful, thank you, the timing is perfect'  She going on to share Gary had a bit of a set back, and this was a perfect time for him to have Jane's book to look at. Gary, through no fault of any, while undergoing an emergency risky procedure a blood vessel bled, long story short... Gary, who just a few days ago helped me carry artwork and hang it in their new home, is paralyzed on his left side.  Their life changed dramatically.  And after Suzanne visited me the next day to pick up her book, I included a gift of my own with it.  Wish had the original, would have given it to them, had a fine art canvas giclee of a painting, that was the first painting painted after a year of NOT painting.  Frankly a heartbreaking year, and painting just touched the heart a little more than could be bared at the time.  Only by invitation was I brought to painting again to participate in a national small works show.  I was so honored to be asked, simply had to paint.  Had no idea, what it would be, simply knew had to. Do believe that was exactly why the gallery owners asked me to participate too. Friends, knew I needed to get back to painting. I did. The name of the painting painted;
"When Darkness Comes... Look To The Light" Sold the night of their opening.
When Darkness Comes... Look To The Light by K Hitt Copyrighted
When shared this with Suzanne at her visit to the studio the day after the call, she said something that left me speechless.  Our collecting your Plein Air Paintings and that day you came to our new home to hang them, is our last 'good memory', of 'good times' 'Looking at your paintings will always be able to take us to that place'  My eyes water again, even as i just type it here! Called her and asked her if ok that shared the continuation of their story in my life as an artist.  She said of course.  For it is a fine line here... but the heart of the affairs at hand are the purpose to this sharing.  A sharing that is a call to all of us as artist to remember the choices that we always have before us.  For inevitably Lemons, Blues, Darkness... is going to be a part of our today's.  To say that this has been a doozy of a few weeks is an understatement. Things coming in threes, we will leave the 'what' to that, Family, Work, Affairs of Life slamming on through. Though Perspective was in line before this event... it became hugely illuminated as realized their was NO coincidence in meeting this couple, and there was no coincidence in the still life prompted to paint. From the post it note to gathering of items for the still life, then a thumbnail... set up in the studio, my new mini Strada, plein air easel.  With the idea this painting was going to be an afternoon alla prima one.  Well Life didn't get that memo, after many an interruption... replaced lemon... blueberries held on, out of just wanting to get it done, signed it before the bee was added.  Giving up on the idea of being able to gather one in time.
Right after doing that received another phone call, bee delivery was on order after all! On all days, Labor Day.  Reminding me tenfold of exactly what it is we labor for.  I don't know if our art imitates life, or life imitates our art... perhaps you do.  I do know our Art does matter.  Why we do what we do... always the question at hand in a manor that we check our fruits, so to speak.  Out and out tragedies in this life happen, as do the mountain top experiences.  They all matter and play a role in what we do.  Art matters to enable JOY to abound by telling the story with beauty from ashes, or mountaintop experiences.  No matter your level, it is to be shared to the best of your ability! We may be an unknown in the art world persay, but we are never a nobody.  Your story, and your art matters to someone. Paint On, as the golfer say's play through, we are equipped to do the same.

Why was this little bee so significant? It resting on the burlap, under the 'Airing The Laundry ' Plein Air Oil on my 'fresh of the easel wall' at the studio, juxtaposition with the Honey, represents the two choices we always have to make in this life, as an artist, and as a person. Live imitating Art, or Art imitating life? Life imitating a bee's life.  For you see, when a bee stings, it hurts a LOT!
The pain resides though.
A bee's life has two choices,
use its God given gifts to either:
pollinate and make honey
or sting and die
Those little seemingly insignificant details in the choices of all served in a day, in reality could rise up and make significant life changing details in an others.

The name of the still life that was inspired to paint:
"Artist Studio Life, With Lemon & Blues Choices"

This Artist hopes to always add Honey when the option is given.  A new friend echoed with this as we talked, “Little people continue with petty things.  Don’t let them get you down. Be big, be bold, be courageous, and be loving.  God put you here to do great things.  Listen to His call.  And be loving toward them as well”
Yup-- ADD HONEY whenever the option presents itself!  Is that our Art imitating Life, or Life imitating Art--
God only knows that answer perhaps.
Here are some of the steps along the way of completing this little painting... a still life inspired from life. First played with the still life, and tried to gather together the appropriate elements. Note my heart rock, also on the fresh off the easel wall next to the painting painted from the exact location on the Merced River, which is where that rock was found. Brought it back with me to the studio.  It was like the rock spoke and said "You will love painting here" so I did. And still do. That little painting to the right of it, the painting from there outside of Yosemite.  Also added specifically to the backdrop for the still life "Airing The Laundry" still life from the the Plein air journey that is also a part of my exhibit coming on 27 February 2015, an exhibit culminating from a solo five month journey in my Tahoe, cris crossing the USA to grow and pursue passion as an Artist. An exhibit that is two and a half years in the making before the long ago planned opening night. Save the date, and  look for my Plein Air Magazines sponsored news coming in the next issue! HUGE leap!
Anyways back to these details, next,
once the elements were aligned, did a thumbnail composition check .
This Thumbnail, literally that, in scale, and almost abstract in composition.  If you look closely though, all of the key elements are there.  Once had this set up, took out a favorite, Mini Strada Plein Air Easel and set it up too in my studio, in position to go with the thumbnail. The goal was to apply all learned in these past two years, painting plein air, Museum exhibits visited, and use the new found growth in the studio too.  Though a professional artist when the journey began, goal again to grow as an artist now that was able to concentrate solely on my art after raising three children as a single parent remains a continual process.  As it is for us all.  We should never stop growing as an artist, and we should never try resting in our successes in a painting by replicating it.  Every painting is a new journey, and new lesson to learn, no matter what your level of expertise.  If you don't challenge yourself anew every day, what good is that???   Yes, you thought this was 'just a still life'... that too is the point. As worked through the details of the week, on top of the details of this painting, much more than anticipated met me along the way.  It was the perspective applied at the time, and it was what enhanced the process.  If you didn't read this blog, you may not have even notice the little bee down in the corner. I even signed it thinking could leave it out, since it didn't seem was going to make it in time for this painting.

To hear that you are the honey added to the eyes of two that were dealt a real lemon that was trying to make them sing the blues… leaves you with water in your eyes, and speechless.
Also something that aligns with every circumstance currently going on in life; it is all a matter of perspective.
Yes, “When Darkness Comes… Look To The Light” Add Honey, and don't waste your life using your stinger.  Its fruitless.
Godspeed
and may it be an UP day! K
