Start to Finish? "Where do I begin, start?" Is often a question heard from students. Or...... as we really WORK IT the details and composition.... sometimes the why we 'started' the painting gets blanketed over with overworking.

Start To Finish. Easier said than done. That is why its a workshop have been teaching for years. Most recently it has been formatted into a 3 day workshop, with the idea of truly taking inspiration from its start, to a finished work of art. Where do we Start.... a scene, a theme, a child's precious smile... a heirloom keepsake, a illustration... WHAT are you hoping to 'say'.

This an example of an 'illustration' literally. A Big Bad Rain Monster? What does that look like.... for a children's picture book. I remember being told when illustrating... the words should connect a word picture in 5 seconds.

Do you need that same impact with your drawing or painting?
What inspired you to make that sketch? What inspired that sketch into a painting? Sometimes it truly is just the desire to 'render'... to perfect a fabrics drape, a hips angle, a eyes twinkle, a hands embrace....

Sometimes the start is simply a color theory exercise, or the particular hours effects of light on a beloved subject. Even a sketch in your sketch book, will reflect 'good draftsmanship'

Confess, this week, after being sicker than have been in years for the last two plus weeks, have not picked up a brush in over two weeks.... 'Where to start?' overwhelms in an explosion of ideas and WANT TO DO'S that haven't had the chance to do. Deadlines, inspirations, entries.... etc. etc. There is SO MUCH that I long to do! To just do anything, will be a fabulous start! A doodle, a sketch, a painting?

Just received the proof today in the mail. The author should be receiving hers any day now too, and then, It will be ready for purchase. Will keep you posted on that. Am getting ready for the Jan. 17th Opening of Venice Plein Air opening. For more info on that visit VPA blog. Ever since New Years Eve beautiful sunset, have been wanting to get back to PAINT en Plein Air the view. Sometimes photographs just can NOT capture the true colors in the scene. The sky in this view... was just one of those. Needed to revisit the site to capture the dunes and trees too. Many details end up just in a silhouette when photographed with most cameras, especially a camera phone. Only sharing a few of the photos from the sunrise to sunset work day here... A day that doesn not get any better than this though. BEAUTIFUL. The PAINTING will be shared (I hope) at the opening! Going to use the field study to make a larger studio piece from... until then... here are a few photos from the middle of the day on... A COLD is kick'in my butt today. Still plan to plein air with VPA monday though, at least say 'hi' to any and all there(Update

Finally Home for the Holiday's

This portrait completed in August, finally made its way to its new home this Christmas. It was given by the grandma of these two beautiful children to her son-in-law. It was designed to depict the casual side of Eli and Henry's visits with Nano under the shade of her Florida Magnolia.

These are just photos taken with camera phone, sorry about their quality, but think you can get an idea.

Think this may be the last painting delivered for 2011. It is on display at Burgundy Square Restaurant on Miami Ave. It just may have found a new home too. Will let you know.

Same Location, Different View ?

Same location, is it the same view? The first time sitting here, the goal was to quickly catch an impression of the colors quickly passing through.

This first, done the last time VPA visited this wonderful property that's owner kindly shares with us. Last Saturday, had the luxury of sitting out at the end of the dock once again, under my umbrella listening to the sound of jumping fish as tried once again to capture the view. These Mangroves so intrigue me... and how the water moves in and out with the tide.

The next time painting this scene, shall use these plein air references for a larger studio piece. Have sketches of the birds that use these same mangroves for their roost as they fish... or preen.. or simply seek shelter. A beautiful spot, that so enjoy the opportunity to paint, especially en plein air. No criticisms meant to any who love the art of photography, but as a painter, can not ignore how the light is shed on a subject. It simply can not be fully reproduced by a camera lens. Though it can be beautifully captured indeed... the effects of the light, and trying to depict those little light bulbs and make them go off on the canvas... is the finishing touches on each plein air painting. They are not quite all here on this last... shared here is simply a quick photo taken with my phone of the work in progress. Think will save this piece to be simply 'en plein air' reference that it is. Another area of study for myself, is the area of atmospheric perspective. It remains my greatest challenge to achieve en plein air. I will take it as good news that I am not done learning it myself yet, for that means once again I surely will find myself sitting out at the end of a dock. More good news, is the canvas above is the same canvas that I had a another first experience with. It is the canvas that I wiped the days painting off of the week before. So progress indeed! This Monday VPA is out and about again. As I have been spending countless hours in the studio of late, working on illustrations. Plein Air, has taken on an added importance. It helps me to see how to paint, like nothing else can. I always marvel as I study some of the Master artist's works that I so love. One of my favorite paintings of all time "Lilly Lilly Carnation Rose" by John Singer Sargent was completely painted outdoors on location. The effects of light on that scene one of the greatest challenges of his subject.

I have two little post-its that always hang next to my easel in the studio.
One post-it: Sargent's 5 types of light; 1. light 2. shadow 3. midtone 4. accent (can either be darkest or lightest) 5. reflective.
The other post-it: John Carlson 4 types of light, lightest to darkest; 1. Sky 2. ground plane 3. slanted planes 4. uprights.

As many artist in history depicted the same subject more than once. We too can take our lessons from the 'Masters' ...Monet for example with his Haystacks, or Cathedral. Review them for yourself. The effects of light on a scene... at different times of the day, so cast it into a different view completely. If you enjoy painting... allow yourself the luxury too of capturing a scene from life. Photography is an excellent tool for reference indeed, but nothing can match learning to capture the effect of light from life. Same location, different view? Try the exercise yourself perhaps... either do a sketch or painting from a photograph, then try to do the same location from life. Or perhaps, as here, two different times of the day at the same location. How has the view changed before you? If a full landscape is overwhelming to start... perhaps a simple still life is a better place to begin. The key is to give yourself the luxury of live observation and trying to depict it. There is much to be learned there, that can not be learned any other way.

I look forward to getting to start my painting week once again en plein air with VPA monday morning out and about. So thankful that we never stop learning... and I so look forward to what I have to learn next.

Monday was a working 'hooky' day and thoroughly enjoyed it, dare I confess. Just had to get out of the studio. So, it started with instructing a 4 hour semi-private painting lesson to two very talented students, then lunch and headed to one of my favorite local spots to paint plein air. Was at the same location the heading photo for this blog was taken. Beautiful day, Scenes, LOVED the back lite lighting on the palms that came with the sunset. Great clouds just enough to add fabulous color to the sky.... SAD truth though, had another first at plein air yesterday too..... I completely WIPED OUT my Painting! Heard of and have seen others do so before. The eternal optimist that I am never had before, though have painted some down right BAD plein air paintings. Always held onto the thought in the back of my head that could tweek them out to work, in the studio at a later time. Well not this time... and decided this piece of linen was worthy of a far better painting.... and scraped the hours of work away. Must say, though sad... VERY FREEING MOMENT to say the least. From there packed up my paints and walked all through the park refreshing my memory of all the things that I have always loved about it. So NO fresh paint plein air to share... but still a learning day of plein air and the joy of watching the effects of light blanket the view.

So instead will share a sampling of upcoming Children's Book that am illustrating. "The Big Bad Rain Monster" should be available SOON. The other two that am illustrating are due to publish in February. Not permitted to share those images just yet. They are part of a wonderful new series coming soon.

So back to my in studio easel for the rest of the week. Then Saturday yeah, another shot at plein air. VPA has a MAP. More info on that can be found at VPA blog

PLEIN AIR HAT time to share VPA as in Venice Plein Air and our MAPs as in Meet And Paint. Creating a new page here, and also it will be posted at PAF, Plein Air Florida for those of you in the area that enjoy painting en Plein Air with others. Goal is for Three Mondays and One Saturday each month for VPA to have a MAP. Holiday's and schedules sometimes interfere.... but visit PleinAirFlorida.org and on their calendar is a list of all the plein air groups painting in Florida. Another wonderful group here is led by Terry Mason named PASC. They meet on Thurs. morning. Check back by the end of the week for the page being added here dedicated to VPA and MAPS. That amazing warm glow that blankets the land and changes the view completely by its qualities taking hold of the ordinary, plain, dull even. As I post this painting, I remember exactly what and why took up the art of Plein Air Painting...

for the joy of experiencing all of these "For The Records" and recording them for history sake.

Being the founder of VPA, Venice Plein Air, am reminded its time to restablish these MAPs that many in this area loved. MAPs are simply Meet And Paint!

So, also because have been MARRIED to my studio easel and drawing table of late due to illustration deadlines.... I am also reminded of the importance of 'en Plein Air'

Step By Step Still Life Drawing Example

To enlarge any of the images, just click on them.

To begin your drawing... remember it's all about finding a good relationship. Find the big shapes first. Break them down.... NO DETAIL needed to start. All the detail in the world will not improve your drawing, if its out of proportion. Confirm that you have all the relationships in place before you start in on the details. These first three photo's are examples of the steps in how the foundation of your drawing begins. With your subject being broken down to very basic shapes, look at the relationship of the objects. Did I mention its also all about finding GOOD RELATIONSHIPS. (Yes the fundamental lessons in life are also a part of learning to draw :0)

NOW that you have a good relationship :0) You can start on your next step. As you start to think about the detail, now its time to remember the world is not defined by a line around it. NOW its time to find the values in your shapes

Many of your edges are actually defined by a value. Within the shapes that you have already defined , the relationships that you have already established, now your next step is to focus on is hard edges vs soft edges with your values. Your eye will be led to where the dark and light meet, in other words the highest contrast. Four simple values are; Dark, Next to Dark, Next to Light and Light. Light often is the value of your paper in graphite drawing. In Conte, its your white chalk. Note, Dark is as close to black as you can make it. This is what your soft "B" lead pencils are for. The higher the number, the softer the lead, and the darker its effect. This just touches on all that is is available to learn about drawing, (tools, technique... foundation). This foundation is what actually enables you to paint. Even abstract artists need to learn these techniques and what makes for a strong composition.

One of the hardest lessons to learn when drawing is that the negative WILL make your positive. The way you draw the light... is by NOT drawing it... but planning for it. Notice here how the original basic shapes of the flowers are now broken down and further defined. I intentionally did not use the word 'detail'. Its still about finding the good relationships, shapes and values.

This, of course, is just the basics in approaching a still life and learning to draw. With a few basic foundational tools, we all have the ability to draw. We may not all be Leonardo Da Vinci. There is a reason Da Vinci is titled a "Master" not to mention a genius. You will find the most important way to learn is practice practice practice. Leonardo spent countless hours applying this foundational tool to every piece of art he created. Good draftsmanship is key. As in life as in art... finding good relationships is key. Its not about the details, its about the relationship.

To summarize : When you start your still life.

Remember it begins by finding the overall relationship of your objects.
Break down the shapes.
Define your values, and your edges with values.
The negative will make your positives. You need DARK to make the LIGHT. Dark is how you draw the light.... by NOT drawing it, but planning for it and drawing the dark around it.

This Painting was hung in the recent exhibit at the Venice Art Center and will be on display there until Oct. 7th as a part of the "VAC Instructor's, Staff and Board of Director's Show" . You can ask at the front desk for my supply list that also list this years upcoming workshops at VAC. They are listed here too on my Classes Page. I was very honored at the Opening by how many shared that the painting above was picked "favorite". It is one of my favorites too, along with depicting one of my favorite locations in Venice. Can you guess where it is? I added below a few of the steps along the way of this painting too. Enjoy. The photo doesn't quite do the colors justice. Hope you will stop by in person and see for yourself.

Another unique side to this painting... learned that there is a truth to once in a 'blue moon'. This exact setting will not take place again for another 100+ years. Sun was setting, literally as the Blue Moon was rising. Hence the title. May it be an UP day! Hope to see you out and about. K

Meant as a casual reflection of visits with Grandma, where no shoes are required... and there is always time to rest is the shade of the Magnolia after giving it a good climb.

apologize for the poor quality photos... just from my camera phone. More to come that reflect the colors and details a bit better.

Long days and am still married to my easel and illustrations of late. Literally painting a montster in the sky just now. Can's wait until the illustrations can be shared. The subject matter has been A little toooooooo close to home- as the setting is the Hamptons. Just so happens the Author of one of the picture books that am illustrating lives in The Bahamas, and is originally from New York, where much family time is spent with her grandchildren and family in the Hamptons.

May we keep them, and all in our hearts and prayers, as the rebuilding of so many areas after Irene will be a part of their today's for a long time.

Some of the views in the last few weeks... SUMMER has found me IN more than out and about this year. Have been blessed with multiple Children Book Illustrating Assignments. Until the books are published, the images are for the most part between Authors/Publishers and myself. HOPE will get to share more in the days to come.
When I do get to enjoy Out And About... the Summer Skies have been like a kaleidoscope... ever changing. Rainy season seems to even be Rainbow season too.
Must say also LOVE when the Beach is in bloom.

Here is one little sneak peak thumbnail sketch of one Children's Book Image Influenced by all these awesome summer skies.

Those of you that have had a class, you have heard me discuss thumbnails a few gazillion times. No one would build a building with out a plan, its no different with drawing or painting. After the original Composition is explored in a thumbnail, the four basic values are planned within that next. Each book that I work on... all 32 pages are placed on a storyboard. On to that storyboard, these little thumbnail roughs... are placed.... that allows the design of the entire book to begin to take shape. Lots of pages to come. EMBARKING ON A NEW SEASON

Its time to get ready for our new season ahead now isn't it! This is a very new season for me as a first since 1998 that I will not teach summer classes for children at the VAC. The reason still is a focus on children though. I have taken on an assignment to design and illustrate a children's picture book this summer. Keep an eye on this blog for updates on images from this endeavor. The author and I are still finalizing the storyboard ...then the paintings will begin.

Currently though, one of the paintings on my easel is of a favorite subject: the gaze of a child. This precious young man is peering out the window as they are about to embark on a journey to dad's homeland.

The expressions of children are so genuine, and I just love trying to capture them. As they peer fearlessly and curiously out on to their next adventure

As to adult students asking about summer workshops.... SOON will post here what dates are available for that. Travels to the authors homeland have my workshop schedule a bit up in the air. Please just either follow this post, or check back in, and as soon as I can put down in ink the dates, will post them here too. NEW SEASON!

This will be the first time since 1998 that I will not be teaching children's classes this summer at the Venice Art Center! The reason still reflects around children though... this summer will be illustrating and designing a children's picture book. Watch this summer for updates of images of it in the works.

As for right now...

On my easel, as pictured in it's beginning drawing stage is a portrait of one of my favorite subjects: the peer of a child's eyes. This one is a precious young man as he is about to embark on a journey to his dad's homeland. Just love the expression in his gaze.
The expressions of children are so genuine, and I so love trying to capture them.

For all of my students asking about summer adult workshop possibilities. SOON I should be posting more info. Timing of travels to the Authors home, is keeping the workshop schedule a little up in the air. Keep checking back here, or become a follower, and as soon as they are available, will post them here first.

Melange Fine Art 252 W. Tampa Venice FL 34285 This original just sold there : "Higel Park Revisited" 24x36 Also just returned from Painting the Region II in Jacksonville. Great weather all week for the plein air event. Over 30 paintings sold at the show.

This Painting was picked as one of the most popular at the event "Sunrise On The Saint John's" 12x16 Plein Air Oil...photos show it in the works... and as finished. This little painting "Oldest On The River" was one of the paintings that sold at the event

Had a wonderful week at the paint out. First half of the week got to partner up with Jane Chapin, a real treat! Enjoyed having a painting partner, we were given a tour of one of the beautiful historic homes on the river. Think the best painting day, was the day painted the sunrise, we rose early to set up and prepare for the light. We witnessed it the day before as it blanketed a glow across the scene as it rose. We went to sleep that night, planning to be ready to capture that glow with our paintings come morn. Jane did a beautiful painting of the view too.

Well, CLASSES begin THURS at VAC... if you haven't signed up yet its not to late. Right now have just enough for a class, there is room for a few more. See the Link to the left for more info, or just drop me a line.

This workshop is designed to take you “Start To Finish” in the FUNdamentals of accomplishing your artistic endeavor. HOW TO’s of planning, thumbnails, composing and executing a painting. This class is designed to take the essential foundation of strong drawing skills, composition, value, capturing light, color theory and expression to a finished work of art. Lives Saved

Lives Saved of my old brushes that is. Well On Day 3 of Painting daily till next teaching day... or "What I did on my summer vacation" essay continues with the big reveal this fine Monday morning. I am happy to announce... SUCCESS! Lives of brushes were saved and restored to their fine edges!

Thanks in part to Don Demers suggestion in his workshop to soak them over night in Turpenoid Natural- then clamp matboard to the ends...
Well I added a few steps to that. If you would like to try restoring some well used brushes to life of real edge painting again, here is what I used:
1. Turpenoid Natural
2. Gamsol Pure Mineral Spirits
3. Kafka brush oil and preservative
4. mat board/cut into small squares
5. soft paper towels/rags
6. opened up coated paperclip
7. paperclips/ heavy clips
Ok, first, simply soak your brushes overnight in the turpenoid natural. IT IS IMPORTANT that you use a container that doesn't allow your bristles to touch the bottom, or be bent as they soak. (Brush cleaning tin that has the coil extension at the top works great) I filled it to just over the top of the hairs.
After soaking the brushes, rinsed them in Gamsol. Then those that still needed attention, in the lid of a jar, had a little more Turpenoid natural. Held brush in there and cleaned it by combing inbetween the hairs with a coated paperclip(softer edge) Did this until rinsed completely clean and bristle laid straight again.
Then, rinsed in Gamsol again, then dipped in Kafta brush oil, along with the edge of a small piece of paper towel. Carefully squeezed out excess oil, carefully re-shaped and wrapped the bristles with the slightly moistened paper towel, to keep the hairs straight. THEN sandwich all between too pieces of mat board and clipped the end with either another paper clip or heavy duty clip for bigger brushes.
After leaving them that way over night. Opened them up this morning, and YEAH!!!! Like new brushes to paint with again.
Considering the times, even on sale, new brushes are expensive... so-
have a dozen like new plus to add back to my daily painting jar. YEAH.

Hope these steps work for you too. Just carefully soak, comb, reshape, clamp, and finally reveal- NEW LIFE

Cayo Costa's Hidden Hut is a plein air oil on linen done on a beautiful spring day just off of Boca Grande Island. We journied by boat from Venice and anchored at shores edge of Cayo Costa's Island. Really enjoyed this plein air endeavor, not to mention the day. If you look closely You will see the hut built probably by a scout amongst the foliage on the island.

JUST posted my summer schedule at the VAC to the right too... Classes start as soon as June 6th... for all ages. Children and adults.

Well it is amazingly STILL beautiful out and about weather! Many have been plein air painting... ummmmmm - NOT hardly I though. Have turned in my summer teaching schedule to VAC and next year to Boca Grande! Can you believe it. Think the quick draw at the "Forgotten Coast Paint Out" may be my next plein air endeavor. Missed last quick draw planned when knee tried to be a thigh. What's up with that! ? ! ? On top of that the very next week for the first really significant time, threw my back out! OK, I don't know about you, BUT I AM TOOOOOOOOO YOUNG to be this OLD! Even if my middle guy turned 21 on the 21st this month. In the spirit of too young to be this old here is a painting of a friends dad titled "Nah Nah Na Nah Na..." May it be an UP day! k

"Indian Summer Sunset" is from the end of the dock at Alpine Groves Park... overlooking the St. Johns River. It was an absolutely amazing sky... True Alizarian Crimson flashed through it. The week at Painting The Region 2009 was long and ENJOYED. Did 5 paintings while there. This was the last completed. Sold the 1st and last done too! So that added to the trip being beneficial. ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL area that had never been to before.... This event made it possible. Every one worked very hard to keep all of us artist comfortable, and inspired. THEY SUCCEEDED!!!!! Tenfold. Been home a week now... feverishly catching up on commission paintings....

Here is "Ron's Find," it is my latest Oil on 11"x14" Linen panel. Students from my last class may enjoy seeing this online. It was started in class and used as a demo on how to use your photographic reference and working them into a painting. Composition, relaying colors, playing up the warm and cools and the effects of light on the scene, while establishing atmospheric depth where the photograph may flatten it out were emphasized. This is the same reference that 7 artist friends all did a painting of. It was a fun exercise and critique of how each artist' literally approached the same subject differently. Hope you enjoy the view... always enjoy your reviews too.

Continue working on commissions in the studio. Confess, my front yard hauntingly calls me to paint the crepe myrtle in bloom and surrounded by all the other blooms around it. Commissions In The Studio Continue...

This is a fun portrait just completed of twin brothers playing at their favorite park. It is a 20x24 Oil on Linen "Boys Exploring All The Ins And Outs Together"

Look forward to sharing another in the works of two more brothers playing in the surf at the gulf. It is a major 30x40 portrait... that due to shoulder injury am way way way behind on... but am determined to complete this summer.

Do look forward to also painting some of the glorious blooms that abound both at the beaches and inland.

"Reflections At Fort De Sota" Plein Air Oil just won an merit award at the Venice Art Centers current exhibits. See it on display now at the Venice Art Center. This a scene just before the sun set at Fort Desota Park, that lit up the palms across the distant shoreline... with the birds resembling little lightbulbs on the sandbar.

Fort De Sota is one of the most amazing state parks available. Hope you enjoy the view too.

Workshop

Trip out for the Workshop on the "Forgotten Coast" was a moms day gift and b-day too. We will not mention which one. The joy in this Mothers Day felt like a 1st grader again. The 1st day of a workshop refreshed, encouraged, discouraged, humbling while enabling... In the aspect of 1st grade where all the fundamentals to learn open up a whole new world. Good news in the humbling side of "wow, so much to learn" is just that... There is ALWAYS more to learn... And that I am not done yet! When you stop learning... You stop growing. So much to see... So much more to know. So thankful that on Moms Day got to be the kid.. And that this instructor got to go back to the 1st grade.

The images shared here are from the last time visited this coast. It was shortly after the hurricane had gone through. This is a pastel from what was witnessed then... "Sapped In A Snap". The pastel is on display in downtown Venice at the Back Eddie Bistro, on Miami Ave as part of the Venice Art Center Sattelite Exhibits. Once back in Venice hope to get a new image on display from the Forgotten Coast. It is beautiful up here. Simply beautiful with something amazing visually to paint in every direction.

Extended my trip and distance by almost 1000 miles... continuing the travels and moms day experiences. Hope to pass back through the Coast upon my return too. Hope you are enjoy your views too...

Getting ready to head up to "The Forgotten Coast" in the panhandle. This my Mother's day and Birthday gift, to venture out of the neighborhood, en plein air and paint in a workshop too. Look forward to the trip. Not sure about wireless connections... so may be away for a few days

This Plein Air Oil "Floral Invitation" just sold at auction in the Boca Grande Garden Club Annual Plein Air Event. The event was a fundraiser for the Boca Grande Art Alliance... and was a success once again this year!

This view was exactly as it's title, The Flower baskets literally just drew you to the shop right in down town Boca Grande. Let me know if you know the spot.

This one being a bit more graphic design in the composition... but enjoyed playing up the high contrast and juxtaposition of the images. A 20x24 Acrylic. Here, the view is once again, still on the easel, is now on display at the Venice Art Center. This painting is my version of Mother and Child...
